We invite you to apply for an internship at Kayan from January 2019 onwards! Kayan welcomes interns all year round, both from Israel and from around the world. Interns contribute to all fields of our work, variant upon their skills and interests. They have the chance to learn about Kayan, participate in workshops, seminars and conferences, and to work closely with activists striving to improve the lives of Arab women in Israel.
Responsibilities: As an intern, you will be able to assist with tasks and work closely with the Resource Development and Outreach Coordinator such as grant writing and editing, social media updates, website management, graphic design, email management, and much more! In addition, you will have the ability to come up with and pitch new projects as you see fit to aid the Development and Outreach team with their work. Any international travel, accommodation, and any other expenses while interning at Kayan are the responsibility of the intern. Unfortunately, as a small non-profit organization, we are unable to secure a visa on your behalf, but we will be happy to advise you on such matters.
Requirements: Written and spoken fluency in the English language - candidates with additional fluency in Arabic and/or Hebrew are strongly encouraged to apply; education in a related field and/or relevant professional experience. Kayan prefers interns who are able to make at least a 6-months commitment.

Interning at Kayan Feminist Organization - by Intern Laura Ostrow
When I first learned that I would be interning at Kayan, I was so excited to be able to be a part of work that is important and meaningful. To be able to work at a Palestinian feminist organization while on my internship program in Israel was exactly the kind of work I wanted to be involved in, in any way I could.
For the past four months, I have worked on the Development and Outreach team, working to aid Kayan in promotion and fundraising, an integral part of the work we do here. Not only is it great exposure to a fundamental part of working at an NGO, it is also a way that I can contribute to the organization and feel like part of the team. I have been lucky enough to work with the wonderful women of Kayan, and see their passion behind the work.
A typical day at Kayan involves working collaboratively with the Development Resource Coordinator, and any other interns working at that time on varying projects such as social media and website updating, grant proposal and report copy editing, as well as writing grant proposals and reports on my own. I also work on advertising and marketing, creating organizational systems, English translation, and anything else the team needs help with! Each day is different here, and the depth of the work Kayan does in the field on a daily basis continues to impress me.
As violence against women in Israel escalates and comes more and more to the forefront of conversation, and as Arab women's rights are continuously tested within their communities, I feel as though Kayan's work to advocate for and empower Palestinian women in Israel is more important than ever. I will forever be thankful to the women at Kayan for this experience, not only for gaining great professional skills, but also for welcoming me as one of the team and opening my eyes to the reality of the struggles of Arab women in Israel.
Interning with Kayan - by intern Kelsey Hyslop
I was offered an internship position with Kayan during my semester studying abroad in Haifa, Israel. My internship has been a learning experience that’s inspired me to continue working in social services in the future, especially promoting women’s rights.
The mission of Kayan is evident upon interaction with the Kayan team, who work hard to enhance the status of Arab-Palestinian women in Israel. One of my personal goals for my internship was to learn about challenges that Arab women face. Many women face societal and cultural challenges to equality, such as social normalization of violence against women. They also face legal challenges in the religious courts, employment discrimination, barriers to housing and land, health disadvantages, and barriers to political involvement. I was unaware of these issues before my internship, but my work with Kayan has exposed me to this disheartening reality.
Kayan aims to rid violence against women, an issue which is growing in awareness thanks to the work of Kayan and other groups. During my internship with Kayan, I’m able to engage in the 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women, a worldwide campaign that Kayan supports through workshops and demonstrations. I promote Kayan’s outreach to the community through its social media pages, fostering a welcoming environment that encourages participation in Kayan’s mission from the broader society.
As an intern with Kayan, I have the opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way to an organization fulfilling an urgent need. My work falls under Development and Outreach. This includes a wide variety of responsibilities, including updating social media pages and Kayan’s website, contributing to grant reports and proposals, and writing English communications (letters, emails, translations, etc.). I work in collaboration with other staff and interns on these responsibilities, and together we have an immediate impact on Kayan.
My internship with Kayan has been a great way for me to learn about grassroots’ community work. In addition to the skills I'm learning, I have the privilege of interning in an environment of people who are passionately dedicated to improving the lives of Arab women in Israel.
